Q

What is meditation?

A

Meditation is a practice where an individual uses a technique – like mindfulness to enhance focus, awareness, and relaxation. Meditation can be used to achieve a state of mental clarity, calm, or a stable state. This tool can transform the mind and invite enlightenment.

Types of Meditation

Religions including Buddhism, Hinduism, and even Islam, Judaism, and Christianity, have some form of meditative practice. Meditations roots are in spirituality but most people today practice meditation for stress relief and to calm the mind. There are many types of meditation but the three most common ones include mindfulness, mantra, and guided meditation. A quick overview of the three below:

Mindfulness Meditation:

This type of practice originates from Buddhist teachings and is the most popular meditation technique in the West. With this meditation, you should pay attention to your thoughts as they pass through your mind. Don’t judge them or become overly involved with them. Just observe and take notes of any patterns you find. While doing this it can be helpful to focus on your breath or an unmoving object. This type of meditation is recommended for those who do not have a guide or would like to practice alone.

Mantra Meditation:

Mantra meditation is prominent in many teachings, it can be easily found in Buddhist and Hindu traditions. This type of meditation uses a repetitive sound to clear your mind. It can be repeated fast or slow, sometimes is it repeated by itself or in connection to concentration on breath and certain feelings. It can be a word, phrase, or sound of your choosing. The popular phrase associated with this type of meditation is “Om.” This mantra does not need to be spoken loudly or quietly. After chanting it for some time you should feel more in tune with the environment around you, this will allow you to experience deeper levels of awareness & alertness. This is a good practice to try if you don’t favor silence and enjoy repetition.

Guided Meditation:

This is a type of meditation led by a teacher in person, via audio, or video. If you are new to meditation this can help guide you through the basic steps of your practice and lay the groundwork. In guided meditation, a teacher explains the dynamics of the mind and how it will likely react during meditation. The teacher will then explain meditation techniques and how to take these techniques into your everyday life.

It can be helpful to decide if you would like to start with a guided or unguided practice. The meditation practice you prefer is going to differ from person to person, but it is important to explore each option and choose what will benefit you the most.

Q

How do I add CBD to my meditation practice?

A

If you are using one, it could be beneficial to try the other as well. With a multitude of benefits in common, it is natural to wonder if together they could help with your meditation practice. Sometimes it can be difficult to calm the mind or ease mental fatigue due to the lingering stress of daily life. CBD has become a part of many people’s daily stress-fighting routines, due to suggestions that it promotes a soothing feeling and eases anxiety. One main benefit of CBD is that it does not contain the cannabinoid THC, so it can be used without the “high” of marijuana. If you have trouble releasing tension or stress before your meditation practice, CBD could be a beneficial addition. By helping you relax it will allow you to connect with your mind and body more easily in practice.
